I use a mixture of these two techniques in most of the books that I have written.
Narrative Writing Technique
When employing this writing technique, (which is the primary one that I use, especially in my Bermuda’s Secret Series), the story is narrated to an audience, as it happens. Sometimes it starts at the beginning and sometimes it occurs out of order.
Some, if not all, depending on the storyline, of the primary characters are introduced, and the story proceeds as it happens. As writers, we need to make ourself one of the characters (sometimes, in my opinion, but not always). If we choose that route, then we should narrate the whole story from that character’s point of view. A narrative story has many plot lines, dialogues from various characters, various situations, conflicts and disputes, a beginning, intervals (for my books, the plot lines), and an ending. To put it in simple terms, the narrative writing technique is the art of describing a story from an “author-chosen” character’s point of view.
Descriptive writing Technique
This technique is where we writers employ a copious amount of detail to explain the situations or the story to the the readers. This usually involves intricate details related to the characters, the setting, the situations, the story and the objects around them too. As a writer, it is our duty to help our readers visualize what they will see, hear, or feel as if they are right there in the world that we created for them seeing what we see, hear and feel. The devil is in the details when we write employing this technique. The more details we provide in our story, the better the outcome for our readers. I have also employed this technique in tandem in several areas of my Bermuda’s Secret series.
I, personally, feel that using both of these techniques is imperative to assist the reader in understanding what is happening in the story that I am trying to tell.
What techniques that an author or aspiring author chooses to use, and how they employ them, are dependent upon what sort of book that they are writing!
These are just a few things to think about as your story unfolds!
