This Genre Can Encompass More than We Think!
I decided to take a closer look at historical fiction as a genre. Here is some of the information that I found, which I will touch upon and then present my own take on this, as well.
Historical Fiction used as a genre is typically set in a real place. It is also, typically set during a culturally recognizable time. With respect to my own Bermuda’s Secret series, this would have been set in the 1865-1900’s time frame.
Our story can be a mix of actual events and events from the our own imagination, as we, the authors, fill in the gaps with a little of our own fictional flavor to direct the details and the action as our own narrative unfolds. As for the characters in our own take of the story, they can be purely fictional, or they can be based upon real historical figures from the era that we are writing about. Many times, we do both, mixing fictional and historical figures together! This mix makes our fictional story even more believable!
If We Embark on Writing in this Genre, We Should Adhere to Staying in the Era That We are Writing About as much as Possible
This, of course, goes without saying.
We should always research world happenings during the era we are writing about to lend more authenticity. I have done this throughout my Bermuda’s Secret series. It tends to give the story more credibility to the imagination of my readers. When you are writing like this, you should keep this in mind, and do this too! It definitely helps with plausibility for the readers, as well!

In conclusion, no matter what genre that we choose to write our next book (or book series) in, we should always make it sound believable and authentic. This will end up making our writing much better and believable by our readers!
If you do this in your writing, the extra effort put into research will make it so much better. If you take the extra time and effort to do this, you will not regret it!
