How I Start out writing one of my fiction novels

It’s not as hard as you think.

A small section of one of my handwritten manuscripts.

For many of us, writing a book is an achievement that might have festered over the many years, even as far back as our childhood (which is when I came up with the idea for my Bermuda’s Secret series!) Some statistics in the US show that about 80% of Americans have wanted to write a book and eventually publish it at some time in their lives! Sadly, It is estimated that fewer than 0.1% have actually achieved that grand accomplishment!

It simply doesn’t have to be this way nowadays with the advent of online self-publishing platforms like Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform (KDP). This is where my Bermuda’s Secret series is available to either read or purchase!

No matter what many websites will tell you there is no one secret formula to writing that will ramp up your creativity and show you how to write a book that will become that bestseller that will make your dreams come true. Every potential author’s writing style is different, and you must simply get started and find out what actually works for YOU!

If there are bestselling authors that you like to read books from, you will find that they have highly effective writing habits and styles which help them achieve their goals. If you are one of those who really want to write a book of your own, then all you need to do is try to identify those writing habits and styles, and then do your best to emulate them!

Here are a just few steps to follow to get started. There are many sites with similar steps, and some with altogether different steps. Research a little, and find one list that suits YOU!

  • You need to start with a good book idea!
    • This might take some time, but it will serve as a foundation for your work!
    • You also need to add a little research to this, depending upon what you are planning to write about.
  • A simple outline will help you get started, although, most of the books that I have written have been off the cuff!
  • Make sure that you know what genre you want to write your book in.
  • A first draft is critical, but not totally necessary for some depending on your writing skills.
    • I tend to write my drafts on legal tablets with a good old ballpoint pen! (and example of one is in the above image) When I am “in the zone”, the words just seem to flow! I set aside time every day to do this, without fail. Others have called this a creative routine. Not all of us have time to do this, but if you are serious, you will set aside some time to make it a habit!
  • I usually write from the kitchen table, but also, believe it or not, and don’t laugh, the bathroom! These are essentially my “writing spaces”!
  • I then transcribe the finished book to the computer, by reading and typing it in, but am also planning on using voice to text software for some of my upcoming projects.
  • They say to avoid distractions, but I have the uncanny ability to write no matter what is going on around me. You just need to learn how to drown those distractions out.
  • Once I transcribe to the computer, the first draft is considered finished, and now the tedious editing process begins! By now, our “Labor of Love” is getting closer to being complete!
  • When the editing process is deemed complete, it is then time to get the book published! Like I have said, I currently use the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing platform, and have had no real issues with it, so far!

There are many other publishing sites too!

Choose the one that you feel will be best suited for you!

Until then, keep writing!
